Jack Pinnington Jones, a former college tennis star at Texas Christian University, is making waves in the professional tennis world. After losing in the first round of qualifying at the Australian Open, he embarked on a 32-hour solo journey to Egypt for an ATP Challenger Tour event, where he made the final in Soma Bay. This is just one of the many remarkable journeys of this rising tennis star.
A New Experience and a Mindset Shift
Pinnington Jones described his experience in Egypt as a completely new one, going from his first experience in Australia for a Grand Slam to a Challenger in Egypt where he didn't know anyone. He had not been home since Thanksgiving, meaning two and a half consecutive months on the road. Despite the challenges, he made the best of a tough situation and made the final in Soma Bay.
A Learning Experience and a Big Change
This time a year ago, Pinnington Jones was beginning his final spring season at TCU, where he competed for three years and earned All-American singles honors twice. He followed in the footsteps of Top-100 players Cameron Norrie and Jacob Fearnley, who also played for the Horned Frogs. It was a big change for him, being away from home for such an extended period of time for the first time.
A Competitive Spirit and a Social Personality
Pinnington Jones brought a competitive spirit and an edginess to his team, helping them go a little further or compete a little harder every day in practice. He is a big personality, and he was very social and playful, which helped him settle in after the first few weeks. His former coach, David Roditi, described him as a superhero who tried to win on the court and at night as well, but eventually learned that he can't do both.
A New World and a Supportive Team
Since deciding to forego his senior season at TCU, Pinnington Jones has stepped into a new world. Instead of traveling with his team to different dual matches or tournaments, he is climbing the ATP Tour ladder. He has a great team around him, and he is really thankful for the support from the LTA, which helps him manage the stresses and travel that come with the job.
A Rising Star and a Big Boost
In the past year, Pinnington Jones has climbed more than 200 places in the PIF ATP Live Rankings. Thanks to his college success, he was a multiple-time qualifier for the Next Gen Accelerator, which allows qualifiers to benefit from direct entry into ATP Challenger Tour events. He knows that it's a big boost to start his pro career, and he's determined to keep playing well and earning wild cards.
A Home Tournament and a Special Run
Before arriving in Dallas, Pinnington Jones spent a week at TCU with his former coaches and teammates, some of whom have been supporting him at the ATP 500 event. He feels like it's a home tournament, especially with the run he's having, and he's really special.
