Team USA's chemistry shines in WBC exhibition vs. Giants - ESPN
By Jesse Rogers, Mar 3, 2026
The atmosphere at the spring game was electric, with Team USA players remaining in their uniforms and dugout until the end of their 15-1 victory over the San Francisco Giants. This was the vision of manager Mark DeRosa, who wanted to foster a strong team environment.
"It felt different from 2023," DeRosa remarked, referring to the previous year's WBC. "Everyone stayed until the end."
The team's chemistry was evident, with 19 hits, including home runs by Alex Bregman and Roman Anthony. Despite only being together for a couple of days, the players' bond was already strong, aiming to create a positive environment after their second-place finish in the 2023 WBC.
"There's an excitement in the air when you walk into the clubhouse," Bregman shared. "The focus is intense."
Paul Skenes, the starting pitcher, pitched three impressive innings, giving up only one run and striking out four. He will continue pitching in pool play and the semi-finals if Team USA advances. Giants pitcher Logan Webb will pitch Game 1 on Friday, followed by the quarterfinals, while Mets starter Nolan McLean is scheduled for pool play and the finals.
The team's lineup was a force to be reckoned with, and Skenes was in awe of his teammates' performance.
"It's surreal," he said. "We're going to be excited when we get to Houston and it's for real."
DeRosa's strategy to build team cohesion has been ongoing, with group texts, watching the Olympics, and having two servicemen (Skenes and Griffin Jax) on the roster. He even invited Michael Phelps to speak to the team at dinner, emphasizing the importance of not settling for second place.
"Second place won't cut it," Phelps advised. Team USA will play their second and final exhibition game on Wednesday against the Colorado Rockies before heading to Houston for their WBC opener against Brazil.
"Everyone's motivated and ready to compete," Bregman stated. Team USA is geared up for the challenge ahead.
